Commodore Advanced Sciences, Inc. (CASI) offers structural, civil, electrical, chemical and mechanical engineering support for remedial design and facility management activities as well as support services including engineering records management with an emphasis on providing rapid document access and computer-aided design.

REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE

FACILITY MANAGEMENT SUPPORT AT ETTP.
As a subcontractor to American Technologies, Inc., CASI is providing engineering inspection/evaluation, facility condition assessment surveys and waste management support for the US Department of Energy (DOE) Oak Ridge facilities at East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP). CASI' scope of work includes annual inspections and evaluations of structural building systems in Buildings K-27 and K-25, tracking deficiencies, recommending maintenance and repair actions, and preparing comprehensive inspection reports. CASI also conducts annual assessments of general facility conditions (inclusive of all building systems) of approximately 7.2 million square feet of building space following Department of Energy (DOE's) Condition Assessment Survey Program.

GENERAL ENGINEERING SERVICES SUPPORT TO BECHTEL JACOBS COMPANY LLC.
As a subcontractor to Tetra Tech NUS, Inc., CASI provides general engineering services (GES) to support the Bechtel Jacobs Environmental Management and Integration contract at DOE Oak Ridge Operations. CASI has supported DOE facilities in Oak Ridge, TN, Paducah, KY, and Portsmouth, OH. Work being provided includes:

GENERAL ENGINEERING SERVICES SUPPORT TO BECHTEL JACOBS COMPANY LLC.
As a subcontractor to Tetra Tech NUS, Inc., CASI provides general engineering services (GES) to support the Environmental Management and Integration contract at DOE Oak Ridge Operations. CASI has supported DOE facilities in Oak Ridge, TN, Paducah, KY, and Portsmouth, OH. Work being provided includes:

  • REPACKAGING PROCESS RELOCATION PROJECT. CASI provided civil and structural engineering support for facility modifications and new process equipment design to support relocation of the waste repackaging process at the TSCA Incinerator. CASI designed the waste transfer conveyor system, waste sorting table, and waste container tilting table apparatus. CASI also provided engineering support to evaluate the load bearing capacity of the building slab, contamination containment modifications and building access modifications.

  • MODIFICATION OF CRASH GATES AT EAST TENNESSEE TECHNOLOGY PARK (ETTP). CASI prepared conceptual and detailed designs for modifying vehicle crash gates at ETTP. The original crash gates were installed to discourage unauthorized vehicle access to Flanagan Loop Road at ETTP and were originally designed to "breakaway" or fail upon vehicle impact in an emergency that did not permit time for the gate to be manually opened. The gate breakaway mechanism was aged, dysfunctional, high maintenance and cost-prohibitive. CASI redesigned the gate configuration and breakaway mechanism for ease of use and to minimize maintenance and upkeep costs, while maintaining the original intent and functionality of the gates.

  • LOADING FACILITY DESIGN. CASI is responsible for providing the design and construction drawings for a reinforced concrete and structural steel loading facility required for loading of waste shipping casks for spent nuclear fuel and remote handled low level waste . The facility will be constructed in an existing sloped area, and the design must consider a surcharge load from a 100-ton crane locked at the top of the slope. Included in the project is a geotechnical investigation to accurately evaluate strength and deformation characteristics of the soil to ensure satisfactory and economical design of the foundation, retaining walls and crane pad.

DESIGN/CONSTRUCTION SUPPORT UNDER THE HAZWRAP PROGRAM. Under contract with Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, Inc., to provide support services to the Hazardous Waste Remedial Actions Program, CASI prepared construction plans and specifications to support remediation of several sites at Air National Guard Bureau installations. CASI also prepared internal cost estimates and provided technical support during construction, operation and closure phases of various projects.

For example, CASI developed plans and specifications for removing, treating, and/or disposing of inactive underground storage tanks and associated piping, equipment, and liquid contents at two facilities in Virginia.

At two ANG sites in San Juan, Puerto Rico with shallow petroleum-contaminated soil, CASI provided the engineering design for horizontal vapor extraction systems, including revising the plans and specifications to accommodate a proposed building addition.

MASSACHUSETTS MILITARY RESERVATION (MMR) FS-12 SOURCE AREA REMEDIATION PROJECT. As part of a CERCLA time-critical removal action, CASI designed a combined air sparging/soil vapor extraction system to remediate petroleum-contaminated soil and groundwater in an 11-acre source area, approximately 90 feet below grade. Detailed technical support and remediation oversight was provided to the MMR IRP office to ensure that contract technical requirements were met during the construction, operation and closure phases of the project. System closure documentation was prepared by CASI. EPA Region I and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection approved the FS-12 Source Area Remediation System for closure based on satisfactory accomplishment of remediation goals and criteria.

ENGINEERING DOCUMENT CONTROL SERVICES TO ROCKY FLATS ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY SITE. Through subcontracts with Kaiser-Hill Company, LLC, and other subcontractors at Rocky Flats, CASI provides technical and administrative support in comprehensive engineering document control. Tasks include document filing/archiving, copying and distribution, quality control, CADD support and implementation and maintenance of computer databases for managing engineering documentation.
