Field services provided by Commodore Advanced Sciences, Inc. (CASI) extend to the most unique situations. In addition to standard environmental sampling and sample management services, CASI has assembled and trained a specialized team to collect samples in the most hazardous environments.

KEY AREAS

SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS PLANS. In addition to development of sampling and analysis plans, CASI consults with clients to make sure that the logistics, sampling methods, sample containers and sample preservation techniques are accurate.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PROGRAMS. Our personnel assist clients in evaluating  radiological and other health and safety concerns of sampling programs to ensure that both CASI and plant support personnel are adequately protected during sampling operations.

SAMPLE MANAGEMENT. For large or ongoing projects, CASI manages overall sampling programs including development of plans; selection of laboratories; sampling; sample receiving, handling, and shipping; data collection; data validation and reporting.

SAMPLE RECEIVING, HANDLING, AND SHIPPING. CASI has extensive experience working with environmental, hazardous active mixed waste and bioassay samples. Our personnel are trained in the proper handling techniques, chain of custody requirements, as well as the regulations necessary for the safe packaging and shipment of these samples.

ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING SAMPLING PROGRAM. CASI routinely collects samples for environmental characterization, monitoring and remediation projects. CASI field personnel use a variety of sampling techniques, applying the appropriate technique to each sampling event while maintaining the quality and integrity of the samples. CASI provides cost-effective and efficient sampling support throughout the U.S.

SPECIALIZED SAMPLING SUPPORT TEAM. CASI specialized sampling personnel often work in highly radioactive and hazardous areas and are qualified to work in gloveboxes, glovebags, confined-space conditions, and poisonous atmospheres. They are trained and equipped to safely collect a wide variety of samples, including indoor air, soil, groundwater, surface water, sediments, concrete, asbestos (Sampling team members are Certified Asbestos Inspectors.), paint, explosive and reactive chemicals, and hazardous, radioactive, and mixed wastes. Samples are collected from wells, sumps, drains, process lines, tanks, drums, pits, and excavation and drilling operations. In D&D projects, CASI personnel collect samples from the floors, foundation, walls, roofs, and other parts of the structure.

CASI field personnel actively research and implement new and innovative techniques to solve unique sampling requirements and meet our clients needs in the most effective, efficient, and safe manner, often significantly reducing the time and cost for sampling various media. Members of CAS' team receive intensive training in all aspects of nuclear and chemical management and safety.

REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE

SAMPLE MANAGEMENT, SPECIALIZED SAMPLING, AND OTHER FIELD SUPPORT AT ROCKY FLATS ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY SITE (RFETS). During our 11 years of support at RFETS, CASI personnel have received numerous commendations for their ability to complete difficult sampling assignments quickly and safely. CASI performance has included:

  • BIOASSAY AND SAMPLE RECEIVING PROGRAM. CASI receives and manages all bioassay samples submitted by RFETS personnel. CASI receives approximately 90% of RFETS environmental samples, monitors for radioactivity, properly packages for commercial transportation and ships to the appropriate analytical laboratory.
  • SURFACE WATER SAMPLING PROGRAM.
CASI samples and monitors all surface water courses to ensure compliance with the site's NPDES permit; collects drinking water to monitor compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act; and supports operations of the site's wastewater and process water ponds.
  • SPECIAL SAMPLING TEAM. CAS' team collects samples under nearly every condition in support of RFETS programs, including Environmental Restoration, Waste Management, Waste Operations, D&D and Nuclear Operations. CASI completes an average of 25 sampling events per week, most in radiation control or hazardous materials areas that require at least level C PPE and operational controls.
INTEGRATED WATER QUALITY PROGRAM (IWQP) AT THE OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY (BECHTEL JACOBS LLC). CASI support included sampling, technical support for report preparation and program plans, quality assurance, and data review and management. Routine activities included collection of surface water grab samples; hydrologic monitoring; retrieval and processing of data from field monitoring equipment; precipitation and atmospheric data acquisition and processing; surface water flow paced composite sampling and post-remediation monitoring; and compliance monitoring.

GENERAL TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO THE MASSACHUSETTS MILITARY RESERVATION. CASI has conducted remedial investigations (RIs) to determine the presence and extent of contamination at various chemical and jet fuel spill sites. CASI was responsible for planning, conducting, and managing all activities including surface and subsurface soil, soil gas, surface water, and groundwater sampling, chain-of-custody, GeoProbeŽ investigations, monitoring well installation, sample management, and data validation.

CHATFIELD BASIN WATER QUALITY MONITORING PROGRAM. Since August 1986, CASI has worked with the Chatfield Basin Authority, Colorado, and conducted in-stream surveys of major tributaries of the Chatfield Basin, in reservoir surveys of the Chatfield Reservoir, and interim spring-runoff surveys.
