Commodore's patented, non-thermal SET™ process has been proven to destroy the hazardous constituents in most matrices to below regulatory requirements. More importantly, SET™ has proven effective against the most toxic chemicals known to humans - dioxins and furans. The use of SET™ to treat dioxins and furans is not only effective but, most importantly, safe.

In addition to being extremely toxic, dioxins are environmentally persistent and difficult to destroy, especially when present and regulated in minute quantities, making remediation of dioxin contamination cumbersome and expensive. Commercially available remediation technology options, such as incineration, are limited and generally undesirable due to the generation of hazardous off-gases.

Commodore's process of remediation using SET™ destroys the contaminants, without creating additional environmental crises, while rendering the soil or other matrix materials non-hazardous.

The SET™ process uses solvated electron solutions to destroy hazardous contaminants. In the case of chlorinated dioxin, the halogen atoms are stripped from the compound and converted to sodium chloride. The dioxin functionality is destroyed. SET™ is a closed system that generates no off-gases or secondary hazardous constituents. And, as an added benefit, the resultant remediated soil can be returned to its original location, eliminating any further tracking of the contaminant.

BENEFITS OF SET™ FOR TREATING DIOXINS

  • Recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a non-thermal process equivalent to incineration, SET™ is the only multi-matrix PCB chemical destruction process approved for nationwide operation. Eliminates the shipping and tracking of the hazardous material as well as risk and liability

  • Dioxins are destroyed, not just removed or concentrated.

  • Original soils and other materials can be reused or disposed.

  • As a closed system, produces no hazardous secondary wastes or off-gases.

  • Operates at ambient temperatures.

  • Transports and sets up quickly in less than 4000 sq. ft of space.

  • Can be scaled to accommodate the size of the project.

  • Requires minimal amounts of power, water, and other outside support.

REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE

The abilities of SET™ as a commercial treatment have been demonstrated in several projects:

  • At the New Bedford Harbor Sawyer Street Superfund Site, treated sludges and oils containing PCBs and dioxins. Reduced levels of PCBs from 32,800 ppm to 1.3 ppm and dioxins from 147,000 ppt to 1.5 ppt.
  • At the McCormick and Baxter site in California, waste oil was treated for dioxins and furans. Dioxins were reduced from 418,500 ppt to 2.3 ppt and furans from 14,120 ppt to 1.3 ppt.
